Magazine Project

Hey guys, sorry I didn't post this sooner, I had issues getting onto the blog. So, as we proposed last friday, we want to produce two magazines; one on fashion and the other on food & wine. We'd like everyone to contribute to both magazines. Please email me at kerrydavidson@me.com by next Friday, March 5th with two ideas for each magazine. Here are the categories for each magazine that we've come up with:

Fashion:
Art, Culture, Fashion
Editorials
Fashion Stories
Fashion Interviews
Fashion Upcoming
International Fashion
Advertising
Fashion Designer Interviews (It might be cool to interview a senior fashion designer here at FIT)
Fashion Event Parties

Food & Wine:
Chef Interviews
Restaurant Reviews
Health
Recipes and photos
Culture
Travel
Wine
Dinner Parties

These are just ideas, don't feel like you have to stick strictly to these choices. If you've got a great idea, we'd love to hear it!

We also need ads, just like a regular magazine has. You can make up your own product and produce an ad for an existing product, i.e. Coach bags.

If you have any questions, please contact any of us:

Kerry Davidson
Catie Taylor
Richard Solinger
Arturo Stanig
Miguel Moscoso

Thanks, we can't wait to hear your ideas!

Capture Fail Pro / Hasselblur / Grainy Day

UPDATE.
We were recently informed by Walter and Brian that the towers do NOT work with the Phase One. I'm mad that they gave that to us when it wasn't capable of ever working, but happy that it wasn't our fault that we couldn't make it work.
--------------------

So... We played around with the Phase One this weekend. Capture One didn't cooperate with the camera. We ended up switching to the Hasselblad with the Phase One back. There is lens flare in most of the images but only because we went insane over a day of Capture One failing and the session was about the cameras, not lighting.

Here is what we learned.

1) Use Capture One. NOT Capture One Pro. It fails.

2) Plug the tether cord from the camera to the tower. NOT the monitor.

3) Put the camera on continuous C setting.

4) When shooting, make sure you have the FIRST 'capture' folder highlighted. There are two. Avoid the fail.

5) Change the camera ready sound to 'PURR'. It is the best. 'Frog' sucks.

6) We never got the P40+ to work tethered. So, we can't give you much information on that.

7) If the P40+ fails, switch to the Hasselblad with the Phase One back.

8) Use a tripod. Focus fail.

9) Make sure you use the curly cable to connect the Hasselblad lens to the camera back so that the mirror up function fires.

10) Many problems were solved by unplugging and replugging the wire. Which resulted in a nice 'PURR' sound.

11) Don't use computer model # that begins with: 117

12) Learn this shit so this doesn't happen to you.

13) Smile! (=

14) P.S. It's better to adjust skin tone and white balance. Any other adjustments can lead to terrible fails. (Grain...)

15) USE A WHITE CARD!

So clear.

Kristine & Julie Congo.

NYC Book.

Hey guys, it's Kristine and Julie Congo.

Just a reminder, please come into class on Friday with a list of three different ideas for locations/subject matter within the five boroughs. If you don't have ideas to hand into us, we will assign one to you (Staten Island....Just kidding. BUT, bring it anyway.)

Please try to break out of your comfort zone and take into account that we want to cover all five boroughs. So if you're brave, try your idea in the Bronx.

For example of an idea:
Someone may like to shoot dancers. So, instead of choosing a dance studio in Midtown Manhattan, they could choose one in the Bronx.

If you have a connection to a place, feel free to take advantage of that for this project. Also, be as specific as possible with your ideas to ease the organizational process for us.

APA: Advertising Photographers of America

Hey!

On February 5th, APA came to speak to our class about their organization, what they do, and what they can do for students such as ourselves. You all should have gotten the information passed out during their presentation, if not, contact me and I'll make you a copy.

I found their lectures insightful, even though it was nothing I haven't heard before. Even so, it's always nice to hear from experience professionals who know what they're talking about. What's more is that, they're here to help us.

Curtis would like some feedback on what you all thought of APA. Leave any questions or concerns in the comment box.

Also, if you need to contact Kaia (the head of APA), her email is: Kaia@apany.com

Cheers,

Vanessa :)

First Post!

Hey Class,

So I'm hoping that everyone keeps up with the blog over the course of the semester. I, along with other class members (or maybe all of you!), will be making updates on various things happening in the class. There's a whole bunch of things that different groups are working on, ie. Final crit, book/magazine for class, etc. Let's try to communicate as much as possible, not just through here but in class as well.

Cheers!

Vanessa
